How to Calculate Flooring Material
This flooring calculator estimates the number of boxes and planks needed for laminate, engineered hardwood, solid hardwood, vinyl plank (LVP), or bamboo flooring. Enter room dimensions in feet, inches, and fractions for rectangular, L-shaped, or custom area rooms. Select the plank size, box coverage, and installation pattern to get accurate material estimates including waste.
Box Coverage
Most flooring boxes cover 18–24 ft². Check the product label for exact coverage. The calculator rounds up to whole boxes and adds your waste allowance (typically 10%). Staggered and random patterns require the same amount of material but different cutting approaches.
Underlayment
Foam or felt underlayment is required for laminate flooring on concrete subfloors and recommended for all floating installations. Standard rolls cover 100 ft² with a built-in moisture barrier. Overlap seams by 6 inches.
Transition Strips
T-molding connects same-height floors, reducers bridge different heights, and end caps finish exposed edges. Count each doorway and room transition to determine the number of strips needed.
